THE   tourism potential of Region Three is set to be significantly expanded following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which is aimed at positioning the Region as a premier destination while unlocking new heritage-based experiences along the Essequibo corridor.

The agreement was signed between the Region Three Chamber of Commerce and Industry (R3CCI) and Trailmasters Adventure Tours, with both parties committing to develop tourism products that highlight Region Three’s rich cultural, historical and natural assets.

Founder of Trailmasters Adventure Tours, Klaus Christopher Chin, said the initiative is rooted in a shared vision to transform under-utilised sites into meaningful tourism experiences.

He pointed to the region’s unique offerings, stating, “Region Three is a place rich in history, culture and natural beauty… yet many of these remarkable places remain underexplored as tourism experiences.”

Chin added that the partnership goes beyond attracting visitors, highlighting that tourism must also benefit local communities.

“Tourism should do more than just bring visitors; it should create opportunities for communities, support conservation and celebrate the heritage that makes Guyana unique,” he said.

He added that the collaboration will help identify and develop products that support entrepreneurs and showcase the region’s identity.

Meanwhile, President of the R3CCI, Bhabita Albert, highlighted the untapped potential within the region, particularly its waterways and cultural assets.

“We have untapped cultural experiences… untapped waterways – opportunities for fishing, for exploring villages, exploring our estates,” she said, while adding that while some tours exist there is more that can be done in the region.

Albert noted that the Chamber will play a key role in bridging private sector initiatives with government support, ensuring that businesses can capitalise on emerging opportunities while contributing to regional economic growth and improved livelihoods.

She reaffirmed the Chamber’s commitment to the agreement, stating that the MoU represents more than a formal signing and signals a collective effort to advance development in the region.

Meanwhile, also present at the signing was the President of the Tourism and Hospitality Association of Guyana (THAG), Mitra Ramkumar, who underscored the importance of strengthening domestic tourism by encouraging Guyanese to explore their own country, even as efforts continue to attract international visitors.

Further, the Director of the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA), Kamrul Baksh, pointed to ongoing infrastructural developments in Region Three as a critical factor supporting tourism expansion.

He noted that these improvements present a timely opportunity to enhance access, broaden tourism offerings and position the region to benefit from emerging opportunities such as cruise tourism.
