THE Guyana Police Force (GPF) is stepping up efforts to improve road safety involving heavy-duty vehicles, as senior traffic officials met with members of the Guyana Shipping Association to address concerns surrounding container transport across the country’s road network.

The engagement, led by the Traffic Chief, Assistant Commissioner Mahendra Singh, focused on reinforcing compliance with established safety protocols for container trucks and haulers operating out of wharves and warehouses. The discussions come amid increasing road use pressures tied to Guyana’s expanding economy and growing volume of imports and exports.

Chairman of the Guyana Shipping Association, Dr Komal Singh, along with other representatives, expressed support for closer collaboration with law enforcement. The association committed to facilitating driver training and refresher programmes, as well as engaging additional stakeholders to promote safer road practices nationwide.

Dr Singh also praised the Traffic Department for its efforts in maintaining road safety despite constraints, including limited resources and the challenges posed by ongoing infrastructural development.

The initiative reflects a broader push to reduce accidents involving large commercial vehicles, which have become more prevalent as economic activity intensifies, particularly in the oil and gas, construction, and logistics sectors. Authorities have previously highlighted concerns about speeding, improper loading, and inadequate driver training as key risk factors associated with container transport.

Friday’s meeting signals a shared commitment between the police and private sector to improve safety standards, enhance driver accountability, and ensure that the country’s roadways can safely accommodate increasing commercial traffic.
