THE trial of four individuals charged with the September 2021 murder of 25-year-old Keon McPherson is currently underway before Justice Gino Persaud at the High Court in Demerara.
On trial are Nicholas Hercules, Brenna Nurse, Devon Harry, and Peter Lam, all facing charges in connection with McPherson’s killing.
McPherson, a resident of Lot 687 ‘D’ Field, Sophia, Greater Georgetown, was discovered dead in a yard at ‘C’ Field, Sophia, with multiple gunshot wounds.
Following a police investigation, the four accused were arrested and formally charged in relation to the murder. They appeared before Magistrate Alisha George at the Sparendaam Magistrates’ Court shortly after the incident.
At that time, the charges were read, but they were not required to enter pleas and were remanded to prison pending the High Court proceedings.
The case was subsequently committed to the High Court, where it is now being heard as part of the current sitting of the Demerara Criminal Assizes. The trial is ongoing.
According to reports, Brenna Nurse is McPherson’s mother-in-law, while the three male co-accused are friends of her son.
Allegedly on August 14, 2021, McPherson and his in-laws were involved in an altercation during which he was beaten by Nurse and the three men. McPherson reportedly managed to escape the attack and returned home, but later that night, he received a call from a woman and left his residence.
Around 04:00 hours on the morning of August 15, 2021, McPherson was found lifeless in a yard at ‘C’ Field, Sophia. Police confirmed that an unknown woman had called the police command centre after seeing a man lying motionless with blood on his body.
Subsequent investigations revealed that McPherson had sustained a gunshot wound to the left side of his chest and another to his right hand.
The trial continues before Justice Persaud as the court examines evidence and hears witness testimonies related to the case.
