PARAMEDIC Tishana Douglas of Paramedic 592 will today (February 28, 2026) launch a Medical Outreach initiative at 9596 Nismes Old Road, West Bank Demerara, under the theme, “Assess. Assist. Activate. Building Healthier Communities Together.”
Douglas, who made history nearly two years ago as Guyana’s first paramedic to complete the Advanced Diploma in Emergency Medical Services (ADEMS) programme at the Emergency Training Institute of Trinidad and Tobago (ETITT), said the initiative reflects her commitment to empowering citizens with life-saving skills.
Since achieving that milestone, she returned briefly to Trinidad and later completed the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH) programme in England. She now serves as a Health and Safety Coordinator with CEMCO Inc., working through E & A Consultant for Kalpataru Power Transmission Limited on the gas-to-energy project transmission line and substation in Guyana.
Sharing details about her “passion project,” Douglas explained that the outreach, which will be conducted alongside a team of eight volunteers, will target communities across the country with practical training on how to respond to medical emergencies, particularly road accidents and other critical health-related incidents.
The aim of the outreach, according to Douglas, is to provide Guyanese with the basic knowledge of non-invasive emergency practices such as Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), splinting, bleeding control, head immobilisation, safe movement of injured persons, the essential information to provide when calling for Emergency Medical Services (EMS) among other areas.
With this, she stressed the importance of calling for direct EMS through the Guyana Fire Service on 9-1-2, for faster responses in these scenarios.
Douglas said, “So, it’s basically teaching the average person what to do and what not to do because as we know it, bystanders are always the ones who actually witness these things or family members, before the actual trained person comes to help.”
Utilising the power of social media, Douglas said she does plan to post educational content weekly, for persons to view online.
Noting that this is not for profit, Douglas stated that on the day of the launch, she will be giving back to the elderly, distributing food hampers, as well as giving blood pressure machines to three elderly persons.
