-PM says government will continue renewable energy expansion
AS part of the Government of Guyana’s continued efforts to expand access to reliable and sustainable electricity in hinterland communities, mini-solar grids were commissioned by Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d), Mark Phillips, at Nappi and Yupukari, in Region Nine, on Friday.
Nappi’new $42.1 million facility, comprising 41.5 kW of solar capacity and 233 kWh of battery storage, will provide electricity to 12 public buildings, serving approximately 853 residents across 165 households.

Addressing residents, Prime Minister Phillips highlighted the government’s continued expansion of renewable energy infrastructure, noting that 56 community solar systems have been designed for and are being handed over to communities across Guyana.
He emphasised that improved access to electricity creates opportunities for food preservation, agro-processing, small businesses, and other income-generating activities, while strengthening essential community services.
The Prime Minister also outlined plans to extend solar infrastructure to additional villages and satellite communities in subsequent phases of the programme. He encouraged residents to take ownership of the facility, highlighting the importance of training local technicians to support its maintenance and long-term operation.
Meanwhile, PM Phillips also commissioned a $50.6 million solar mini-grid at Yupukari.
The 51.5 kW solar photovoltaic system is supported by 265 kWh of battery storage. It will provide electricity to 17 public buildings serving approximately 638 residents across 146 households.

In his remarks, Prime Minister Phillips underscored the Government’s commitment to improving livelihoods through investments in renewable energy, education, healthcare, agriculture and community infrastructure.
He also encouraged residents to take ownership of the new facility and ensure its proper maintenance, while highlighting the importance of equipping local residents with the technical skills needed to support its long-term operation.
The Prime Minister was accompanied by the Chief Executive Officer of the Guyana Energy Agency, Dr Mahendar Sharma, during his visit to the two communities. (OPM)
