GBTI records $4.5B after-tax profit, driven by loan and deposit growth

Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry Limited (GBTI) has reported a strong financial performance for 2025, posting profit after taxation of $4.5 billion on the back of expanding lending activity, increased deposits and continued digital transformation initiatives.

According to the bank’s audited summary results released on Friday, total revenue climbed to $14.6 billion, reflecting a nine per cent increase year on year, while earnings per share rose to $111.1, up eight per cent.  Customer deposits rose sharply by 29 per cent to $269 billion, underscoring sustained confidence in the institution’s stability and service delivery.

The results also show a capital adequacy ratio of 16.4 per cent, signalling continued financial resilience and prudent risk management, even as the bank expands its lending portfolio and digital banking footprint.

Chairman Suresh E. Beharry, in his commentary, highlighted that the performance was driven by “robust loan portfolio growth of 17% and a 29% increase in customer deposits,” while maintaining strong capital buffers and operational strength.

He underscored that the institution remains strategically aligned with Guyana’s rapidly expanding economy, noting that the bank continues to focus on small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) financing, cybersecurity, and governance as key pillars for sustainable expansion.

The chairman further pointed to major strides in the bank’s digital transformation agenda, including the rollout of digital account opening and retail loan onboarding, as well as the expansion of ATM and point-of-sale networks to improve access to banking services nationwide.

“Beyond numbers, GBTI continues to champion nation-building,” Beharry stated, emphasising that initiatives in financial inclusion, employee development and community engagement reflect a forward-looking institution committed to both innovation and national growth.

He added that with ambitious plans for digital expansion, regional growth and sustainable banking, the bank is positioning itself as a trusted partner for businesses and communities, while redefining the future of banking in Guyana.

The full 2025 financial statements are expected to be released following the conclusion of the bank’s Annual General Meeting.
