City Hall warns mosquito nuisance still affecting public health : – urges homeowners to eliminate breeding grounds

THE Public Health Department of the Mayor and City Council (M&CC), over the last few weeks, has carried out 865 inspections of yards and premises in sections of Georgetown and found 125 mosquito breeding places. According to an M&CC press release, the mosquito nuisance continues to affect the public health of local communities, particularly in the southern section of Georgetown.
Meanwhile, the public relations unit of the municipality has been receiving reports from residents about the nuisance.

The council also pointed out that since many mosquitoes breed in stagnant water, source reduction can be as simple as emptying water from containers around the home.
“This is something that homeowners can accomplish. For example, homeowners can eliminate mosquito breeding grounds by removing unused plastic pools, old tires, or buckets; by clearing clogged gutters and repairing leaks around faucets; by regularly changing water in bird baths; and by filling or draining puddles, swampy areas, and tree stumps.
“Eliminating such mosquito breeding areas can be an extremely effective and a permanent way to reduce mosquito populations without resorting to insecticides. The council is calling on all residents to keep their yards clean and tidy at all times,” the release stated. (Telesha Ramnarine)
