Gov’t chides Opposition on inexplicable position – against Women and Gender Equality and Rights of the Child Commissions

THE decision by the Parliamentary Opposition to reject a motion seeking to extend the life of two constitutional rights commissions, namely the Women and Gender Equality, and the Rights of the Child Commissions, remains inexplicable.

Head of the Presidential Secretariat and Secretary to the Cabinet, Dr Roger Luncheon said so yesterday during his post-Cabinet press briefing at Office of the President, in Georgetown.
“Inexplicable continues to be the description of the Opposition’s position in parliament. Devious, then, must be their approach to their constituencies specifically and to Guyanese in general,” remarked Luncheon.
Other inexplicable positions, he pointed out, include the continuation of the ‘Rohee saga’ which sees the Home Affairs Minister being denied the right to speak in the National Assembly. “On every front imaginable, their positions have been eroded and are indefensible and frankly speaking, they contribute to a comic tragedy for them and for Guyana.”
Furthermore, Dr. Luncheon said the Opposition’s rejection of bills without debate, not accepting rulings of the constitutional courts, and recent “machinations” during the AML/CFT Bill, are all other positions that remain incomprehensible.
“Their inexplicable behaviour continues with the Cricket Administration Bill and the Deeds Registry Amendment Bill at their respective parliamentary committees – these two bills have been fully considered and any real difference been dealt with. However, the report by the PSSC to be presented to the full house has been deliberately delayed.”
