A $1.5M cheque was recently presented by Minister of Amerindian Affairs Pauline Sukhai to the Sand Creek community in South Central Rupununi, Region Nine, for the completion of the village’s guest house.
Minister Sukhai, handing over the cheque to Toshao Ken Faria, commended the residents who have contributed voluntarily towards the project.

“If we can change our attitude and give to our country, I think Guyana is going to be a much more progressive country,” she said.
The Minister further added that the grant is not only to complete the entire project but to supplement the efforts of the village.
This year approximately $160M in presidential grants was made available for distribution to various Amerindian communities.
The grant provides villages with the financial resources necessary to fund projects that aim to provide them with the required services within their communities and help improve their economic viability.
The Ministry of Amerindian Affair monitors the progress of the projects while the Ministry’s community development officers in the various regions and residents oversee the execution of the community projects and report to the Ministry.
Several communities in recent months have benefitted from presidential grants, including Micobie and Karisparu Region Eight and Parabara, Region Nine. (GINA)
