THE widow of Basdeo Mangra who died after an altercation with a Route 44 minibus conductor over loud music is lamenting the fact that she is now left to take care of five children and is crying out for justice for her husband.
The man’s wife Kumarie Chintaman told the Guyana Chronicle yesterday that her husband was not suffering from any heart ailment but was diagnosed with diabetes
and hypertension. However, a post-mortem examination on May 3, 2013 on the body of Mangra of North Vryheid’s Lust, East Coast Demerara, by pathologist Dr. Nehaul Singh gave the cause of death as cardiac arrest.
The man’s wife said yesterday that her husband was laid to rest on Sunday and she is expected to make a court appearance today on his behalf.
Chintaman said that the three cuffs her husband suffered at the hands of the minibus conductor accelerated his death and he should be charged for manslaughter.
She said that after Mangra was dealt the blows to the right side of his neck he became dizzy and fell in the bus and they were asked to exit the vehicle at Kitty Public Road, in the vicinity of the Russian Embassy.
The woman stated that her husband said he was not feeling well but they joined a Route 32 bus for Goed Fortuin, West Bank Demerara to attend her sibling’s wake but on their way her loved one said he was feeling very hot and the windows of the bus were opened and some water was poured on his face.
Chintaman added that with that she noticed her husband had leaned to one side of the bus and had two hiccups and then he was no more.
Police said on April 29 that Mangra and his wife were travelling in a Route 44 minibus when he had an altercation with the conductor over the playing of loud music.
He subsequently complained of feeling unwell and was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The conductor and the driver of the Route 44 minibus who were in police custody have since been released.
Meanwhile, she explained that eight months ago their small-scale karahee (cooking utensil) business was halted when their neighbour took them to court over the smoke and noise.
