Mayor of Georgetown, Hamilton Green has disclosed that plans to upgrade and restore Le Repentir Cemetery, the largest in Guyana, are included in the budget of the Restoration of Georgetown project.
He made this disclosure to the media last Friday in an invited comment when he also noted that this cemetery in Georgetown will be placed under better management in time to come.
Media reports had indicated that approximately two weeks ago there were two decomposing bodies in the cemetery that were not buried.
The bodies were said to be discovered by grave diggers and taken to Lyken’s Funeral Home, but the parlour seemed to be full and those bodies were reportedly taken and dumped again in the cemetery without being put below ground.
However, when the funeral home was asked about these incidents, they firmly denied taking the bodies there and said that the reports were false.
Meanwhile, the Mayor stated that this is an issue that City Hall has to deal with from time to time, and the proper restoration of the burial site is being given serious consideration. Green noted that it is general knowledge that it is quite illegal to dispose of bodies without burying them.
He said that the recently established committee dealing with mobilisation of resources will be getting a subvention from the central committee to deal with the restoration of the cemetery, adding that the cemetery has been on the agenda of the City Council to be upgraded.
Green said that while everyone can agree that Le Repentir Cemetery is one which is limited in space, especially in certain areas, particular care needs to be taken when persons choose to make it their final resting place.
In the meantime, Green advised that relatives should select spots in the cemetery wisely and try to upkeep the surroundings.
