A VILLAGER of Islington thought his nephew was ‘pulling a prank’ when he received a call that his home was on fire since he had just left there after switching on a bulb in the two-bedroom home at Third Street, Greater New Amsterdam.
Wayne Taylor, 44, was the sole occupant of the building which was razed by fire shortly after 19:00hrs on Saturday but he was not at home and no valuables were saved.
According to a neighbour, she was looking through her window when suddenly the surroundings was brightened prior to seeing that fire had engulfed Taylor’s home.
“I started to shout, Wayne, Wayne but initially I got no response.”
The distraught man who is employed with a security service recalled to Guyana Chronicle that he was a few meters away when his nephew informed him that his home was on fire.
“I did not believe as I thought he wanted something from the home, and so wanted me to go home. I was reluctant to go as I was with my friends. Just twenty minutes before I went home and turned on the light. The same car that took me home, I returned with it to my friends. All I did was to turn on the light.”
Taylor recalled that his nephew was very persistent in telling him that he should go home and when he relented he got a shock seeing his house ablaze.
“I don’t know if I can build and furnish a home again …It’s hard ….”
Meanwhile, members of the community were high in praise for the efficiency and timely response of the Guyana Fire Service.
