GFA/Banks Beer Knockout Cup : Quarterfinals wrap up tonight

TONIGHT the two semi-finalists will be decided when the quarter-final matches of this year’s Georgetown Football Association (GFA) second annual Banks Beer Knockout Cup are contested at the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) ground. The action gets under way at 18:00hrs with the curtain-raiser, Northern Rangers and Santos FC, then the lawmen, Guyana Defence Force (GDF), take on Net Rockers in the feature at 20:00hrs.
Northern Rangers and Santos had defeated Blueberry Hill and University of Guyana, respectively, on their way to the quarter-finals.
On Tuesday night, the Christmas Day encounters saw GDF crush Black Pearl Football Club 7-1 in the opening match then Net Rockers sank the Guyana Police Force (GPF) team 3-1 in the feature match.
Doubles from GDF’s Marlon Benjamin and Ryan Morrison along with a goal each from Delvin Fraser, Sherwin Caesar and Eusi Phillips, were more than enough to overshadow the lone goal scored by Black Pearl’s Devon Goodman.
In the Net Rockers/GPF battle, the lawmen could manage only one goal from the boot of Rawle Haynes while a double from Jermain Adams and a supporting goal from Orande Wills sealed the deal for the Linden team.
The Boxing Day double-header which included two of the four semi-finalists from the inaugural year had only one progressing to the semis. Sunburst Camptown defeated Kwakwani Strikers 2-1 to make the cut but Fruta Conquerors suffered a crucial 0-1 defeat at the hands of Riddim Squad and were knocked out.
In the opening match, it was a tough battle between Camptown and Kwakwani Strikers as the teams battled to a goalless first half and it was much of the same in the second half as the ball could not find the back of the net for either side.
However, it was Camptown that eventually drew first blood in the 85th minute compliments of former National player Rishawn Sandiford. Four minutes later Camptown plunged into another celebration with a goal from Anthony Sancho which doubled the lead.
Last year’s runner-up, Fruta Conquerors, made one of the most disappointing exits to the tournament thus far. They opened the tournament on a solid note when they defeated Flamingo 11-0 but could not find even one against the energetic Riddim Squad team.
The Riddim Squad team showed tremendous courage and matched Conquerors in each aspect of the game before getting the edge with a 74th minute goal scored by Sceyon Hope.
