Six more persons die after contracting COVID-19

SIX more persons have died after contracting COVID-19, taking Guyana’s overall death toll to 778, the Ministry of Health has reported.

The latest fatalities include three males: a 43-year-old from Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica) and a 74-year-old from Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni), who were both unvaccinated, and a 49-year-old male from Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice), who was fully vaccinated.

The females who died are a 40-year-old from Region Five, a 60-year-old from Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara) and an 81-year-old from Region Four. They were all unvaccinated.

According to additional information from the Ministry of Health, Region Four accounted for 77 of the 123 new cases; Regions One and Five recorded four cases each; Region Three, 17; Region Six, 10; Region Seven, one and Region Nine recorded 11 new cases.
Even as new cases were recorded, 82 persons were reported to have recovered from the virus, bringing the total number of recoveries to date to 26,639.

The country has now recorded a total of 31,359 confirmed cases since the first COVID-19 case was reported in March 2020.
Of the active cases, 31 persons are at the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the National Infectious Diseases Hospital, Liliendaal; 137 are in institutional isolation; 3,774 are in home isolation, and 10 are in institutional quarantine.

The updated COVID–19 Emergency Measures are in force until September 30, 2021. They may be extended or amended by notice of the Minister of Health, after an assessment of the prevailing public health conditions of the pandemic.

As per the current measures, all persons are required to wear face masks when leaving their homes, and physical distancing and adequate sanitisation are recommended. The current curfew is 22:30hrs to 04:00hrs.
