FORMER Prime Minister (PM) of Guyana, Samuel Hinds, teed off the inaugural Assuria 3-Hole Golf Championship during yesterday’s opening, lauding the Nexgen Golf Academy for ensuring the sport is accessible to all Guyanese.
The 4-day event, played under strict COVID-19 guidelines, saw a packed field during yesterday’s opening day at the Academy on Woolford Avenue.

Hinds, along with his grandson Marcus, was a prime example of the contrast between age groups who still show similarities when on the greens.
The former PM added that with the golf programme entering school, it’s likely that more pupils will take up the sport, adding that it’s utterly important to expand golf beyond the local shores and reach similar standards to that of cricket, football etc.
Assuria General Manager Yogindra Arjune thanked Mr Hinds for his support of golf and the Nexgen Academy. He noted that the company is expected to continue its support of golf, more so with the driving range easily accessible in Georgetown.
Meanwhile, golfers will compete in four categories – Men’s, Women’s, Under-12 and U-21, Prizes include, Nearest to the Pin and chances to win a round trip ticket compliments of Copa Airlines.
