FORMER Chess president Irshad Mohamed and junior player Ricardo Narine emerged victorious in the Guyana Chess Federation Mashramani Senior and Junior Online Chess Championship, which was held online on Tuesday afternoon. A few of the players who took part in the recently concluded Closed Senior Chess Championships competed in the older age division battle, including the 2020 Rapid and Blitz Champion Davion Mars.
Despite their recent playing sessions, it was Mohamed who controlled the event. He was flawless to nine points, which had a time control of 10 minutes plus two seconds increment. Mars finished second with 7 ½ points.
Glenford Cortlette placed third with seven points, while Murphy Bagot was fourth on five points and Steve Leung fifth on 4 ½ points. Sherlyta Campayne was sixth with four points, Rai Sharma seventh on three points and Rashad Hussain eighth on 2 ½ points. A total of 45 players between the ages of 8 and 19 competed in the junior competition. In the end, it was the Queen’s College duo of Narine and Alec Lumelino who finished first and second respectively.
St Stanislaus’ Keron Sandiford, the reigning national junior blitz champion, settled for third position.
Oluwadare Clement Oyeyipo, Adia Alphonso, Kishan Puran and Raveon Adonis all ended with six points.
Alphonso also finished as the best female junior.
According to information from the federation, there were commendable performances from Under-12 players Omar Sharrif and Anya Lall.
Cash prize of $50 000 from the GCF will be shared among the winners of the event.
