THE Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment (MNRE) launched its ‘Pick it Up Guyana Campaign’ in the mining town of Linden last Sunday. This activity coincided with the Ride-for-the Environment, coordinated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as part of World Environment Day activities under the theme – ‘Green Economy: Does it include You?’
The campaign was launched by the ministry, and the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Joslyn McKenzie, advocated for a clean and healthy environment while encouraging Lindeners to adopt proper waste management practices. He encouraged community members to take pride in keeping their surroundings clean and become actively involved in coordinated volunteer initiatives.
The National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA) staff and participants of the Ride-for-the-Environment were the key persons responsible for the clean-up exercise at Coop Crescent, Linden. The campaign was endorsed by Ms. Yolanda Hillman, Regional Executive Officer, Region 10, Linden.
The campaign is a massive operation to ‘clean up’ Guyana by reducing the indiscriminate dumping of garbage, which detracts from the splendour of our beautiful country. The Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment is coordinating with businesses, government offices, schools and citizens to clean up the environment. The campaign emphasizes the adoption of environmentally sound practices, enforcement and deliberate actions to create a safe and healthy environment particularly in areas such as markets, parks, seawalls, and other locations. Trophies were also awarded to the riders with the largest contingent as well as the youngest and oldest riders.
