Woman remanded to prison for alleged drug trafficking

MAGISTRATE Sherdel Isaac-Marcus on Tuesday remanded a 24-year-old vendor to prison for possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.

Kamini Devi of West Coast Demerara, appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to her.

Particulars of the charge stated that, on November 24, 2019, at First Avenue, Bartica, she had in her possession 4,544 grams of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.

According to information, on the day in question around12:50hrs, ranks were on police patrol duty at the Bartica Ferry Stelling. As Devi was exiting the boat the boat bowman asked her to take the box which she came on with.

Devi denied the box and they had an exchange of words. The police intervened and Devi was arrested and taken to the Bartica police station along with the box. At the station the ranks opened the box and the suspected cannabis was found; Devi was later charged.
Magistrate Isaacs-Marcus refused Devi bail and remanded her to prison until November 28, 2019.
