Recovery slow for Airy Hall accident victim

AN accident on October 2, 2011 at Airy Hall, Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara has left 10-year-old Shameer Shamsuddin of Cane Grove, East Coast Demerara in a semi-conscious and bedridden condition at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPHC). That accident had also claimed the lives of two children – Colin Williams, 15, of Sandy Babb Street, Kitty; and Raheem Xavier, 13, of Calendar Street, Albouystown.
The boy’s father, the elder Shameer Shamsuddin, told the Guyana Chronicle that the doctors told him there is nothing they can do to surgically correct his son’s condition. As such, his recovery is slow, but he would get better once some patience is exercised and the process is allowed to take its course.
The elder Shamsuddin added that the Cane Grove Primary School student had suffered severe injuries to his head and collarbone, and had sustained a broken jaw in the accident, which occurred when a religious group was travelling in a Toyota Tundra on their way to participate in a religious function at Blairmont, West Bank Berbice, and the driver failed to negotiate a sharp turn at Airy Hall, Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara, causing the vehicle to run off the road. The uncontrollable vehicle had then slammed into a utility pole, after which it had turned turtle. This happened just after 10:00hrs on October 2, 2011.
Mr. Shamsuddin told the Guyana Chronicle that about nine persons, including children, were in the vehicle at the time of the mishap, and upon impact, they were flung from the vehicle, which was badly damaged.
He pointed out that his son has not spoken a single word since the accident, and he has been left bedridden and unable to interact in any way.
Mr. Shamsuddin said that before the accident his child was an active, normal 10-year-old, who participated in several Qaseeda competitions both locally and overseas, and was devoted to his religion. As such, he feels that his son would lead a normal life once he recovers.
The injured child’s mother, father and siblings visit and tend to him on a daily basis, and are hoping he recovers from the semi-conscious condition so he can once again speak.

Others who were injured in that accident and were hospitalized are Ameer Alli, 19, of the Good Hope Masjid, East Coast Demerara; Shameer Alli, 10, also of Good Hope, East Coast Demerara;  Zaheer Yasseen, 13, of 232 Lusignan Grass Field, ECD; Fazal Ali, 10; Mohamed Shamsuddin,40; and Asif Hack of Turkeyen, East Coast Demerara.
