A DENTIST in private practice at Charity, Mr. Feruese Basir (Anriko) narrowly escaped death yesterday morning after the vehicle he was driving plunged into a swollen canal at Walton Hall Village and trapped him under water. He was heading to Anna Regina, also on Essequibo Coast, from Charity and negotiating a sharp turn on the roadway at Walton Hall when he, apparently, lost control of the vehicle and it flipped several times before ending up in a trench with its four wheels in the air.
A young woman, who saw what happened, summoned help to rescue the driver and two men, aided by some women, worked desperately to free Basir who was in the front with water surrounding him.
The men had to break the back windscreen and the locks to open the doors and pull the dentist out to safety.
Basir, who is the son of former Member of Parliament, Mr. Isahack Basir served as a councillor of the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) of Region 2 (Pomeroon/Supenaam) for the past five years.
He is also a very active member of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) and has played an important role in the party’s campaigning activities in the region.
Basir is also involved in mining.
