– Tells arresting cops drugs were hers, begs for clemency

FOLLOWING a police raid late last week at a home on First Avenue, Bartica, a 52-year-old woman was on Tuesday slapped with two narcotics charges.

Wendy Dyers appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and pleaded not guilty to the two charges, the first of which alleges that on Friday October 5, 2018, she had in her possession 25.1 grams of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.
The second charge alleges that Dyers had 16.1 grams of cannabis on the day in question also.

Attorney-at-law Latchmie Rahamat made an application for bail, citing that the drugs were not found in her client’s possession but rather in a room at her home that is occupied by a man named Toney Pollydore.

She also told the court that Pollydore was only recently arrested by the police with drugs, while travelling through a trail in the interior.

But Police Prosecutor Warren Thornhill did not buy the story, and strongly objected to Dyers being granted her pre-trial liberty, saying that on the day in question when the police conducted the raid, the drugs were not only found in a basket with her clothing, but that under caution, she had confessed that it was hers and begged ranks for another chance.

The chief magistrate listened, but in the end ruled in favour of the defense and released Dyers on a total of $87,000 bail. She also transferred the matter to the Bartica Magistrate’s Court for October 25.
