Work started on Uitvlugt Bridge at last

THE new bridge being built to accommodate vehicular traffic, at Uitvlugt, West Coast Demerara, will be ready within two weeks, Chairman of
Region Three (Essequibo Islands/West Demerara), Mr.Julius Faerber said yesterday.
He told the Guyana Chronicle, by telephone, that the contractor has finally managed to acquire the materials and work has already started.
The contract was recently awarded to Yogeshwar Bhola Construction Services but the commencement of work was stalled because the contractor had lacked necessary building materials.
The Uitvlugt Bridge has been closed to vehicular traffic since last December, due to its deplorable state and has caused severe inconvenience because it is the key route to the Ocean View Housing Scheme.
Meanwhile, the other access bridge, though in a deplorable state as well, is accommodating all other the traffic, including heavy-duty vehicles, much to the severe inconvenience of the public.
However, because it is made of wood and due to the volume of traffic, it has to be repaired regularly, costing millions of dollars.
