IT is not a nice job ‘mopping ‘mess’ but every now and again, Freddie Kissoon’s mess needs a ‘wipe up.’ The superfluous ‘fluff’ from his ‘skewed’ pen was again copiously flowing and (without the need to mention) it was via his only outlet, the Kaieteur News, now notoriously known as the ‘mudcracking’ champion. Dear Editor, as I read through his “More Little Things of Large Importance,” I was confronted with a number of follies.
First, from a purely linguistic standpoint, Freddie Kissoon evinces terrible, ‘below par,’ ‘third formish’ writing skills. Dear editor, I am being generous here too, just try and assimilate the following excerpt.
“As the countdown begins to the exit of Mr. Jagdeo, it is expected that there are going to be major assessments of his (Jagdeo’s) failures since he acquired power in 1999 by Guyana’s leading social commentators.”
Now even the most neophytic of language students will realise that Freddie’s language ineptitude is quite glaring here. As I carefully read here, I notice that Freddie writes as though, Jagdeo’s ‘acquiring of power’ was done by Guyana’s leading social commentators. What he wants to say, but is linguistically deficient in achieving, is that Jagdeo’s assessment will be done via these social commentators. For Freddie Kissoon, especially ‘being that all-bright’ yet not a respected scholar, here is how the sentence should have been written.
“As the countdown begins to the exit of Mr. Jagdeo, it is expected that there are going to be major assessments by Guyana’s leading social commentators of his (Jagdeo’s) failures since he acquired power in 1999.”
Here is another classic blunder that epitomises yet again how clumsy he is with language.
“Long before the start of play, Mr. Jagdeo, accompanied by Shivnarine Chanderpaul (who later apologised to the WI Board for his action at a closed-door meeting), stood in front of the Stadium’s entrance with a placard that read: “The West Indian Cricket Board is a disgrace.”
So where was ‘his (Chanderpaul’s) action? I get the impression (from the article) that it was at ‘the closed-door meeting.’ I am sure that the supposed ‘action’ is incorrectly attached. Chanderpaul did not behave badly at this closed-door meeting. The sentence should really read:
“Long before the start of play, Mr. Jagdeo, accompanied by Shivnarine Chanderpaul (who later apologised for his action-where) to the WI Board, (but the apology) was at a closed-door meeting), stood in front of the Stadium’s entrance…”
Freddie Kissoon here is tantamount to the ‘dunce lad’ who always finds nothing wrong with a sentence like: “The lady travelled from Georgetown, in the blue bus, with a broken arm.” By the way, this is the man who readily jumps on people for being poor at language use.
Another foible of Kissoon is that of reverting to the use of hasty generalisations and over arrogation of authority to himself. Again an excerpt suffices:
“It would be a massive statement of fact to say that in terms of popularity, influence and circulation, the Guyana Times is a failure.”
First, this is ‘according ‘to Freddie Kissoon, whose notoriety is common knowledge. The last protest he led at the University of Guyana, Turkeyen Campus, attracted a ‘massive capacity gathering of almost 25 people.’ He even got support from a military man like Jason Benjamin! And while Freddie, the scornful filibuster, was galumphing around the campus, life went on and it was ‘business as usual.’ Mr. Editor, Freddie Kissoon did not/could not influence even ‘one single fellow’ lecturer in his cause. This was no different from his ‘garbage’ protest, in which his only visible support came from his apparent paramour, Mark Benschop.
So I assume that success, as seen by Freddie Kissoon, and as relating to the Kaieteur News, is to be the laughing stock of all Guyana. Freddie has attracted to himself epithets such as ‘mad man’, ‘moving mad house’ ‘Benschop’s catamite’ etc. One can predict a ‘Stabroek News’ fate for him at Kaieteur News. After all, even a best friend can only take so much. Also, we all know that ‘crime knows no loyalty.’
Dear Editor, I have the distinct impression that Freddie Kissoon is suffering from a congenital case of inferiority complex. Maybe this is why he is so inextricably attached to Adam Harris and Mark Benschop. Someone needs to help him so that he will convert and cease his tomfoolery: bad English and falsities.
