–Min. Ramjattan says of Police Service Commission nominees
MINISTER of Public Security Khemraj Ramjattan on Friday said that the names proposed to constitute the Police Service Commission are to his mind “An excellent nomination”.
The minister was at the time speaking during a side interview with the state newspaper, when he was asked about his position on the names that have been proffered.
The names were presented to the National Assembly on Thursday evening by the Parliamentary Selection Committee, which is headed by Minister of Social Cohension, Dr. George Norton.
The Committee, in its report, indicated that engagements were held with the Guyana Police Association, Association of Former Members of the Guyana Police Force, National Community Policing Executive and the Guyana Association of Professional Social Workers.
Both police associations and the former members of the force nominated Retired Assistant Commissioner of Police Mr Paul Slowe to sit on the service commission.
And while the former members of the GPF also nominated retired Woman Assistant Commissioner of Police, Ms Vesta Geneva Adams, the police association nominated retired Assistant Commissioners of Police, Mr Clinton Conway, Ms Adams and Ms Claire Jarvis.
It is widely believed that Mr Slowe will be appointed head of the Commission, while the other nominees will serve as members. The Guyana Police Force could not go ahead with the appointment of deputy commissioners of police, as the life of the previous service commission had expired.
Additionally, the previous body did not provide names to this government as to whom they wished to have serve in those capacities.
The force has an establishment of four deputy commissioners. The last two deputy commissioners in the force were former Commissioners of Police Leroy Brumell and Seelall Persaud.
Two weeks ago, the government commenced a process of interviewing all assistant commissioners of police in its quest to appoint a substantive commissioner of police and a number of deputy commissioners.
