TELECOMMUNICATIONS provider Digicel yesterday became the latest member of corporate Guyana to throw its support behind the Kennard Memorial Turf Club (KMTC) Annual Boxing Day horserace meeting.
At a simple presentation held in its Barrack Street boardroom, Public Relations Officer (PRO) of Digicel Shonette Moore handed over a cheque for $330 000 to honorary president of KMTC and retired Chancellor of the Judiciary Cecil Kennard.
Echoing the statements made earlier by her Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Gregory Deane, who informed the media of Digicel’s investment in Guyana since its first year four years ago, surmounting to US$60M and counting.
“Once again, Digicel is pleased to be associated with the KMTC on their annual Boxing Day horserace meeting.
“As you are all aware, Digicel have been playing an active role in the field of sports, since our inauguration into the business world here in Guyana back in November of 2006, as we have been sponsoring such events as squash, football, cricket, athletics, horseracing and even table tennis and we will continue to be a part of sports in the coming year.”
In his thank-you remarks, Kennard lauded the sponsors for their timely and unflinching support once again, while stating that sponsorship is a vital spoke in the organising of any event, irrespective of the size of sponsorship the organiser receives.
“This is the fourth time for the year, Digicel has come on board with our club, since they first did so for our 2009 Boxing Day meeting and I am happy to have them on board with us, as I have stated before, without sponsorship it is impossible to organise any sporting event.
The KMTC is pleased to welcome Digicel on board for our Boxing Day meeting which promises to be a day filled with lots of fun and with nine races being carded for the day, certainly horse racing fans will be in for a treat.”
Two-year-old Guyana and West Indies-bred horses in the calibre of Cash Connections, Speed Vision, Water Wave and Kevin among others, will be lining up to defeat Wicked Intentions, who has raced unbeaten so far for the year, in the Digicel-sponsored nine furlongs race that has a first prize of $200 000 and a trophy.
According to Kennard, the weather on the Corentyne has been great so far and once it remains the same, then certainly horseracing fans and turfites will be in for a splendid day of racing that has over $5M in cash and prizes to be distributed to the various winners.
