THE Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and the Guyana Police Force have secured an aircraft left abandoned at the Yupukari Airstrip, Central Rupununi, Region Nine.Army Chief of Staff Brigadier Mark Philips confirmed the discovery and told the Guyana Chronicle that the aircraft was spotted by residents of Yupukari who alerted the GDF and the police. “Yes, we found an aircraft at the Yupukari airstrip based on information from people in the area.”
Brigadier Philips could not state where the aircraft originated from. “A team is in there now investigating…the aircraft has been detained and secured by GDF. The Guyana Police Force, CANU and the GCAA officials have been flown in to do investigations.”
The Chief of Staff said too that more information would be made available Thursday as the team continues its investigation.
Last December, a Venezuelan- registered helicopter landed on an airstrip at Kaikan, Region Seven with approximately eight heavily armed Venezuelan soldiers. The Guyana Chronicle reported that when the helicopter landed there were two Amerindian women close by. The women told police that two armed men, reportedly soldiers, disembarked the aircraft and enquired if they were at Sanguan, a farm in Venezuela located approximately 10 miles from Kaikan.
By the time GDF ranks arrived in the area, the Venezuelan helicopter had already departed.
