Motorists no longer surrendering tickets at Harbour Bridge

MOTORISTS traversing the Demerara Harbour Bridge (DHB) from the eastern end, with effect from Monday last, are no longer required to surrender the tickets purchased to allow their vehicles to cross the facility.
The new arrangement became operational at 14.00hrs on that day, and according to General Manager of the Corporation, Mr Rawlston Adams, for the remainder of the afternoon and well into the night, customers, upon arrival to use the facility, heard the announcement `Do no surrender your  tickets’ blaring through a loud hailer.
The surrendering of tickets by motorists as proof of legitimate use of facility has been in place at the 30-year old facility shortly after it was commissioned on July 2, 1978 and put into use.
However, with the Corporation continuing its technological upgrade of operations, this has now become obsolete, and all activities and operations at the 6,074-foot long floating facility and its perimeter, including approaches on both sides by motorists with their vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists, and the purchase of tickets at the eastern end are now being monitored on a 24-h basis via CCTV ( Close Caption Television) cameras.
And, within a matter of weeks, the CCTV cameras at the DHBC will be linked directly to the Police network by way of a VON system, Adams reminded.
He said the cameras for that specific purpose are also being installed and software to facilitate the connection has been sourced overseas and are to arrive in the country soon.
