THE South Dakota circuit has been transformed into a battlefield of asphalt and burnt rubber for today’s King of Drags event, which falls under the auspices of the Guyana Motor Racing and Sports Club (GMR&SC)According to club’s president Mahendra Bhoodoo, today’s event has been on the minds of competitors since the year commenced and is expected to be one of the largest.
Over 20 competitors for Suriname are already in Guyana for the quarter mile shootout with the best of that country expected to come under fire from some of Guyana’s best according to the GMR&SC boss.
He said, “It is Guyana’s Golden Jubilee and we want to make it big; we want to make an impression so we went out to the Surinamese and try to bring all their fastest cars here which they responded. We ourselves put our systems in place and our competitors are stepping up to the game.”
“We are looking at 100 competitors to run, about 20 Surinamese and close to 80 locals so we are going to start early. At 09:00 we are going to start qualifying and at 12:00 eliminations will start. We will not be registering after 10:00hrs in the morning,” continued the GMR&SC president.
“It will be a beautiful day of racing; Rain or sun. We will not postpone it nor will we not cancel it. It has to be on Sunday and it will be a beautiful day.”
Admission for adults is `$1000, children $500.
Today’s event will also feature the class type drag where participants will be separated based on their times over the quarter mile.
