Johnson’s hat-trick, Hinds’ double see their teams through

BFA 2010 Cheddi/Janet Jagan football …
MONEDDERLUST Football Club’s Gladwin Johnson struck a hat-trick, while Jomo Hinds of Fruta Conquerors got a double as their respective teams advanced to the second round of the Berbice Football Association’s (BFA) Cheddi/Janet Jagan Memorial knockout football tournament which commenced last Sunday in Berbice.
Playing at the Number Five ground, after the Burnham Park was ruled unsuitable for the tournament due to its present condition, Monedderlust defeated Hopetown United 3-0 thanks to Johnson’s hat-trick, while Conquerors defeated Linden’s Net Rockers Football Club 4-1.
Fruta Conquerors and Net Rockers got this year’s tournament started, with both teams, which were evenly matched, enjoying fantastic ball possession, before Net Rockers drew first blood as early as the third minute, thanks to Keon Bristol.
Not to be outdone, Conquerors responded 15 minutes later when Hinds found the back of the net for his first goal, following a neat pass delivered from the right side where he defeated Deon Tyrell in goal for Rockers, as the first half ended one-all.
The second half was slightly lopsided with Conquerors having a one-man advantage after Net Rockers’ Deshawn Joseph was expelled from the game after receiving a second yellow card for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Eon Alleyne scored first in the 48th minute, while Hinds completed his double four minutes later and when Gerald Gittens found the back of the net in the 64th minute, it was all over bar the shouting for Net Rockers in the 70-minute encounter.
In the second match of the day, the home team Monedderlust FC rallied on the back of Johnson’s goals which were scored in the 17th, 46th and 48th minutes respectively to pound out a comfortable 3-0 win over Hopetown United who played with grit and determination but found it difficult to contain the former two-time BFA League champions.
The tournament continues this weekend with some very exciting match-ups between teams from Linden, Georgetown, East Coast and Berbice.
