A LATE batting collapse saw the West Indies women’s team lose their first-ever series against South Africa following a four-run victory for the Proteas at PPC Newlands yesterday.Chasing a modest total of 119 for 3 the West Indies were in a strong position needing just 19 runs from the last three overs.
The dismissals of Shermaine Campbelle and Shaquana Quintyne, who were both run-out for one and five respectively, shifted the momentum in the Proteas’ favour.
Needing 12 to win off the last over Shabnim Ismail stifled the efforts of the regional team by conceding a mere seven runs.
Throughout the innings the West Indies routinely failed to put partnerships together with the second-wicket stand between Haley Matthews (24) and Stafanie Taylor (21) who put together 32 runs, and Deandra Dottin (24) and Kyshona Knight’s (9) 24-run, fourth-wicket stand, being the only ones worthy of note.
The West Indies got off to a fast start after winning the first game in the series, but will have some soul-searching to do after losing the subsequent two. The players are expected to depart for India ahead of the start of the ICC World T20.
