Lady Jaguars create history to qualify for CONCACAF Gold Cup

GUYANA’S Female National Football team, more popularly known as the ‘Lady Jaguars’, have written their name in the history books after defeating Cuba last evening by a 3-1 margin to become the first team (male or female)  to qualify for the CONCACAF Gold Cup.
Playing at the Guyana National Stadium in front of a highly vociferous crowd, the ‘Lady Jags’ avenged their 1-0 loss which they suffered on the away leg in Havana last week.

The Cubans opened the scoreboard with a strike through Yezena Martinez in the 35th minute but their lead was short-lived since the locals struck back two minutes later.
Team captain and playmaker Ashley Rodrigues converted a penalty which was offered when teammate Brittney Persaud was fouled in the 18 yards box.
The scores were level on a goal apiece heading into the second half, and, cheered on by an exciting home crowd, the Lady Jags turned up the pressure on their Cuban counterparts.
Persaud was  rewarded  in the 44th minute for her hard work throughout the night when she brilliantly found the back of the net and four minutes later, Justina Rodrigues sealed the deal.
The win means that Lady Jaguars will be heading to Cancun Mexico later this year for the CONCACAF Women’s Gold Cup.
