– Project slated for completion by month-end
CONSTRUCTION of a new five mile earthen embankment between the Mahaicony and Abary Creeks in Region Five (Mahaica/Berbice) is underway and Chief Sea and River Defence Officer, Mr. Jeffery Vaughn, said the effort is a collaborative one.
The work is being done at Good Faith, along Dr. Harrichand Street, and the parties involved include the Sea and River Defence Department; the Mahaica, Mahaicony, Abary Agricultural Development Authority (MMA/ADA) and residents in the community.
“There was overtopping that affected the community during the last spring tide and the new embankment will prevent that (from recurring) and avert a catastrophe,” he said.
Vaughn explained that after the problem was raised, a meeting was called with the different stakeholders and a forward plan of action was decided on.
The Chief Sea and River Defence Officer indicated that each party is making a contribution and he pointed out that MMA/ADA has made available technical assistance as well as an excavator for use.
He said, “We also have an excavator and the residents are making concessions for us to complete the work.”
According to Vaughn, the project is expected to be completed by the end of the month.
