$18.3M contract signed for rehabilitation of Skeldon Hospital

RESIDENTS of Region Six, East Berbice/Corentyne, would be benefiting from improved medical facilities following rehabilitation work on the Skeldon Hospital. Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Hydar Ally, yesterday signed a contract at the Ministry of Health boardroom to facilitate the upgrade of the in-patient area, theatre, dentistry section, kitchen, laundry room, canteen, maternity ward and the roof.
The completion of the rehabilitation works to the main building and surrounding facilities will enable the institution to be equipped to efficiently provide quality services to the region.
The staff would also be able to provide quality services to the patients in a favourable environment. The rehabilitation work is expected to be completed in three months.
Minister within the Ministry of Health, Dr. Bheri Ramsaran, emphasised that the contractors are expected to deliver in a timely manner while, Ally stated that the ministry expects quality work and value for money.
To complement the ongoing expansion of health facilities nationwide, the ministry is dispatching Guyanese doctors, trained in Cuba, to aid in strengthening of the work force.
A sum of $13.3B was allocated in the 2010 budget for infrastructural and personnel upgrades in the health sector with $1.4B for sustained construction, rehabilitation and maintenance of health facilities nationwide.
These improvements in the health sector demonstrate the administration’s dedication to continuously provide quality health care countrywide.
