EU supports new chapter for science, innovation, health in Guyana

THE European Union [EU] is helping lay the foundations for the Guyana BioPark, in partnership with the Ministry of Health and Belgium’s BioPark Charleroi.

This ambitious initiative, signed in April 2026, aims to unite research, biotechnology, and businesses, opening new avenues for medical innovation, pharmaceutical development, and solutions to health challenges in Guyana and the wider Caribbean.

Through the EU-funded PharmaNext initiative, support will help develop specialised skills, build research partnerships, and facilitate knowledge and technology transfer between Europe and Guyana.

For Guyana, this means opportunities to strengthen local expertise, create skilled jobs, attract investment, and diversify the economy—with the long-term goal of translating scientific advances into improved health outcomes for its people.

This week, following productive discussions with Minister of Health, Dr Frank Anthony and local partners, it was agreed that the project addresses real needs and can foster a robust ecosystem centred around health, innovation, and life sciences.

As part of the EU’s Global Gateway strategy, the focus is on the next steps to advance our vision: investing in people, knowledge, and Guyana’s future.
