COMMERCIAL food preparation trainees at the Board of Industrial Training (BIT) Eccles Training Centre demonstrated their culinary skills and practical knowledge during a dinner exercise on Thursday, October 15, as they prepare to enter the food service and hospitality industries.
The event formed part of the trainees’ four-month programme, providing them with an opportunity to apply the techniques and knowledge acquired during training through the preparation and presentation of a multi-course meal.
The menu featured a range of appetisers, main courses and desserts, highlighting the participants’ developing abilities in food preparation, presentation and menu planning.
Among the appetisers served were cream of eddoe soup, fish fingers and stuffed eggs. Main courses included chicken in mambo sauce, fish in cheese sauce, and beef in honey and mustard sauce, followed by cupcakes and other desserts.
The practical exercise allowed trainees to demonstrate their creativity, attention to detail and ability to prepare a variety of dishes, while gaining experience in delivering a complete dining experience.
The dinner also recognised Breast Cancer Awareness Month, highlighting the importance of early detection, regular health checks and support for persons affected by the disease.
Beyond the culinary showcase, the exercise provided a platform for trainees to build confidence and strengthen the practical competencies needed to pursue employment or entrepreneurial opportunities in the culinary and hospitality sectors.
Practical training is an important component of vocational education, enabling participants to apply classroom instruction in settings that reflect the demands of the workplace.
As the trainees approach the completion of their four-month programme, the dinner marked an opportunity to demonstrate their progress and readiness to take the next step towards graduation and entry into the workforce.
