PEOPLE’S Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) Member of Parliament (MP) Suresh Singh has rejected claims by Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed that young children in Foulis, East Coast Demerara, must travel long distances to attend school, pointing to a nursery school commissioned in the community more than a year ago.
Singh was responding to a video posted by Mohamed on Monday, October 5, 2026, in which concerns were raised about children having to travel far to access education.
The government MP described the narrative as false, noting that a nursery school is located in the vicinity of 11th and 12th Streets, Foulis.
The $34 million facility was commissioned in August 2025 by then Minister of Education Priya Manickchand, with capacity to accommodate 40 pupils from Foulis and neighbouring Paradise.
Singh explained that the project followed community consultations he conducted in 2023, after which he had submitted a formal request on behalf of residents for the construction of the school.
Funding was subsequently allocated in the 2024 National Budget, allowing construction to commence that year.
He recalled conducting a site visit on February 10, 2024, alongside a representative of the Region Four Regional Democratic Council and community leaders.
According to Singh, he also made several visits during construction to monitor the project’s progress.
The MP maintained that the existence of the facility contradicts the impression that Foulis lacks access to nursery education.
The school was constructed with classrooms, play areas and other amenities to support early-childhood learning.
While Singh has challenged Mohamed’s portrayal of the situation, the specific circumstances of families referenced in the opposition leader’s video have not been independently established.
