CONSTRUCTION of a new roundabout at the Timehri Junction, in the vicinity of the Timehri Police Station, is expected to begin soon, with the Ministry of Public Works implementing a traffic management plan aimed at minimising disruption to motorists and residents.
The ministry said a comprehensive consultation exercise was conducted before the works, involving 44 stakeholders within the project area.
Those consulted included seven major institutions—the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Laparkan, Guyana Prison Service, Guyana Fire Service, Guyana Defence Force, Marriott and Phoenix LTB—as well as 15 small businesses, two schools and 20 residents.
During the initial phase of construction, work will focus on the roadside drain at the north-eastern section of the junction, adjacent to the Timehri Police Station. One lane will be temporarily closed to facilitate the works.
As construction advances to the main roundabout structure, two-way traffic will be maintained along the western carriageway.
The ministry said a dedicated emergency access lane will also be maintained at the entrance to the Timehri Police Station to ensure that emergency vehicles can enter and exit the facility without interruption, under the direction of police personnel.
Traffic management measures will include the installation of cones, barriers, high-visibility warning devices and directional signs throughout the work zone. Members of the Guyana Police Force Traffic Department will also be deployed to assist with the movement of traffic.
Motorists using the Timehri Junction have been urged to exercise extreme caution, reduce their speed to 30 km/h and comply with all traffic signs and directions from police officers.
The Ministry of Public Works has appealed to motorists, residents, businesses and other road users for patience and cooperation while the infrastructure works are undertaken.
