YOUTH Basketball Guyana’s select XI had a stiff test on Saturday in their opening game of the Paradise International Basketball Tournament.

 

They first had to contend with Host St. Maarten, who edged them 53-33; Guyana’s top performers being Dimitri Singh with 9 points and Deshawn Gurrick with 7 points.

 

The team struggled offensively, missing 36 layups and turning over the ball 28 times.

 

Their next match against an Aruban team will close out the group stage against Anguilla today.

 

The 11-member team was selected from a group of promising student athletes from 7 different schools that competed in the National School Basketball Festival hosted by YBG.

 

The team is made up of Dimitri Singh, Deshawn Gurrick, Liam Bart -Queens College, Kellon Lyte – Skeldon Line Path Secondary, Lucas Pinol – Marian, Dion Moore – Hope Secondary School, Romario Munroe- J C Chandisingh Secondary, Carlson Matheson – Berbice High School, Brad Cush, Daniel Cox, Jacob Hilaire – St. Rose’s High.

 

The team is led by University of Guyana winning coach Warren Wilson, assisted by Judah Stephney and Calix Bernard, and team chaperone Leona Kyte.
