Paradise Intl Basketball Tournament…

THE Youth Basketball Guyana (YBG) select team has landed in St. Maarten to compete for the first time in the 3rd Paradise Showdown International Basketball Tournament.

The event runs from today (Saturday, October 3) to Wednesday, October 7, 2026.

The 11-member team was selected from a group of promising student athletes across seven different schools that competed in the National School Basketball Festival hosted by the YBG.

Director of Youth Basketball Guyana and team manager Chris Wayne Bowman said, “YBG sees this as a very good opportunity to provide exposure for young student athletes; it also allows us to get a good measure of the competition across the Caribbean.”

Noting that the event is geared towards the continued development of the youth looking to pass the U-18 stage, he said: “Everyone sees the success of something like this in winning a championship, but YBG sees beyond, in developing systems and structure for the propulsion of the next generation of players by testing their skills. We expect to do well, but that will not be our only gauge of success.”

In terms of the team’s preparedness, Bowman said: “We have a good group of players, good camaraderie, and we have had good support from parents, our principal sponsor, G-boat, to our budget, along with the financial support of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, and other kind partners.”

The team is made up of Dimitri Singh, Deshawn Gurrick, and Liam Bart (Queens College), Kellon Lyte (Skeldon Line Path Secondary), Lucas Pinol (Marian Academy), Dion Moore (Hope Secondary School), Romario Munroe (JC Chandisingh Secondary), Carlson Matheson (Berbice High School), and Brad Cush, Daniel Cox, and Jacob Hilaire (St. Rose’s High).

The team is led by University of Guyana winning coach Warren Wilson, with assistance from Judah Stephney and Calix Bernard, and team chaperone, Leona Kyte.
