THE ICT hub at Orealla Primary School in Region Six has been connected to the community’s 45.9-kilowatt-peak solar photovoltaic (PV) mini-grid, paving the way for the facility to access a reliable renewable energy supply once renovations are completed.
The electrical connection works were carried out by Guyana Energy Agency (GEA) Network Maintenance Technician Dianand Dhrigpaul, with assistance from Caribbean Efficient and Green-Energy Buildings (CEGEB) Project apprentice Sasha Benjamin.
The ICT hub is currently undergoing renovation and is expected to use the renewable energy supply to power lighting, computers, fans and other equipment when it becomes fully operational.
The solar connection will also allow residents to charge electronic devices at the facility.
The upgraded hub is expected to expand access to information and communications technology services for primary and secondary-school students and teachers in Orealla.
The facility will provide resources to support teaching, learning and other educational activities, while improving access to technology within the community.
The connection forms part of ongoing efforts by the government, through the GEA under the Office of the Prime Minister, to expand access to clean and renewable energy in communities across Guyana, particularly hinterland and remote areas.
The programme is also intended to strengthen the delivery of public services and support socio-economic development by improving access to reliable electricity in communities outside the reach of conventional power infrastructure.
