THE Rotaract Club of Georgetown Central (RCGC) has launched an eight-month international pen-pal programme aimed at building friendships and cultural understanding between young leaders in Guyana and the Turks and Caicos Islands.
Dubbed TwinConnect, the initiative pairs at least 30 Rotaractors, 15 from each club, in an organised exchange with members of the Rotaract Club of Providenciales.
The programme is the first major initiative to emerge from a formal Twinship between RCGC, representing Rotary District 7030 in Guyana, and the Rotaract Club of Providenciales, representing District 7020 in the Turks and Caicos Islands.
The Twinship is intended to facilitate sustained collaboration, cultural exchange and joint community service between the two clubs throughout the Rotary year.
TwinConnect began on September 4 and will run until April 23, 2027. Participants will communicate regularly through one-on-one exchanges, monthly virtual fellowship meetings and shared monthly activities.
Through the programme, the Rotaractors will learn about one another’s communities, cultures, professions and service experiences, with the aim of developing friendships that extend beyond the duration of the initiative.
International Service Director of RCGC, Afeeza Khan, said the programme was designed to create lasting relationships rather than a one-off interaction.
“We didn’t want a one-off event. We wanted something that gives relationships room to breathe, to grow, and to become something real,” Khan said.
The club said the eight-month duration was deliberate, noting that meaningful international fellowship requires consistency, trust and shared experiences.
TwinConnect was developed in response to interest from members of the two clubs, with organisers saying the approach ensures participants have a direct stake in shaping the initiative and its outcomes.
The RCGC also plans to introduce additional activities under the Twinship, including a flagship Twin Exchange during World Rotaract Week 2027. Under that initiative, one Rotaractor from each club is expected to travel to the other’s country.
The programme is aligned with several Rotary International areas of focus, including peacebuilding and conflict prevention, basic education and literacy, and community economic development.
The RCGC said the initiative demonstrates how international fellowship can contribute to service by encouraging young people to develop greater understanding of communities and cultures different from their own.
The Rotaract Club of Georgetown Central is a non-profit, non-governmental organisation for people between the ages of 18 and 35. It focuses on community service, leadership development and responsible citizenship in Guyana and internationally.
