THE Lima Regional Hospital continues to play an increasingly important role in providing accessible healthcare to residents of Region Two, with thousands of patients accessing a wide range of medical services during August 2026.
Figures were presented by Head of the Regional Health Committee, Melrose Henry, at the recently held Regional Democratic Council meeting. The numbers were based on the monthly report submitted by the hospital’s doctor in charge, Dr Sheneer Reid, who highlighted the extensive list of services being provided at the facility.
During August, the hospital recorded 1,280 visits to the Outpatient Department (OPD), while 658 patients accessed specialised clinics. The hospital also facilitated 76 deliveries, reflecting its continued role in providing maternal healthcare services within the region.
The medical section recorded 72 surgeries during the month, while diagnostic and specialist services remained in high demand. The Eye Department attended to 346 patients, while the Audio Services Department recorded 195 visits, and the Dentistry Department provided care to 570 patients.
Diagnostic services also recorded significant activity, with 539 ultrasounds, 97 CT scans, 709 X-rays and 108 EKGs performed. The hospital also provided 275 dressing services.
Dialysis services continued to support patients requiring ongoing treatment, with 16 patients initially enrolled and 15 remaining enrolled during the reporting period. The facility recorded one death and one stillbirth in August.
Laboratory services represented another major area of activity, with 30,639 laboratory tests conducted. The hospital recorded a total of 2,088 patients accessing these services.
Pharmacy services were also in high demand, with 2,612 prescriptions dispensed during the month. Of these, 2,509 prescriptions were fully filled, while 103 were partially filled.
The hospital also continues to provide a critical link for patients requiring care beyond the facility. Thirteen referrals were recorded during August, with 12 patients transported by ferry and one by water ambulance.
According to Henry, the figures paint a picture of a regional hospital serving a diverse range of healthcare needs—from routine outpatient consultations and dental care to surgery, diagnostics, dialysis, maternity services and emergency referrals.
Meanwhile Regional Chairman, Devin Mohan, said the Lima Regional Hospital demonstrates the importance of having healthcare services available closer to the communities they serve, reducing the need for residents to travel outside the region for a wide range of medical care.
He said the Government of Guyana has continued to invest heavily in delivering quality health care services in Region Two.
