…Winners to cart off $400,000
FOLLOWING closely on the heels of a promise made by Prime Minister, Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips, at the launching of the ninth edition of the PM T20 Softball Cup, the prize money for the women’s category of the tournament has seen a significant increase.
Originally set at $200, 000 for the winners and $80, 000 for the runners-up, the victorious side will now cart off $400, 000 and the runners-up $200, 000, Georgetown Softball Cricket League (GSCL) President Ian John assured yesterday. The entrance fee remains $40,000.
Delivering remarks at last Thursday’s launching of the 2026 tournament, at the Gandhi Youth Organisation (GYO) ground in Georgetown, Prime Minister Phillips had once again stressed the importance of the women’s participation and made it clear then that he intended to make a donation to the original cash prizes. He also challenged the organisers, the GSCL, to do likewise.
Meanwhile, several incentive prizes are also up for grabs in the category. The MVP will take home a four-burner gas stove, the player with the most runs – a floor model water dispenser and the bowler with the most wickets – a microwave. All the respective players of the finals are also guaranteed trophies.
This year’s tournament is likely to comprise eight women’s teams as registration continues for all categories. The defending champions are Linden’s Supreme Stars.
The three-day extravaganza is set for October 2-4 at various venues in Georgetown, culminating with the four finals – Open All Class, Masters Over-40, Legends Over-50 and Women’s Division at the Police Sports Club ground, Eve Leary on the final day.
