THE boat captain and two crew members charged in connection with the deaths arising from the MV Barima tragedy remain on remand, as the court moves towards completing key pre-trial proceedings.
The matter is called before Magistrate Ravindra Mohabir at the Charity Magistrate’s Court, where the three accused, Kevin Price, called “KP”, a 40-year-old captain of Melanie, East Coast Demerara; Rondell Dwayne Roberts, a 42-year-old chief mate of Meadow Grove Public Road, East Bank Demerara; and Delon Granderson, a 33-year-old goods superintendent of Fellowship, West Coast Demerara appeared virtually via Zoom.
Price and Granderson are represented by Attorney Dexter Smartt, along with a team that includes Dexter Todd, while Attorney Everton Lammy-Singh represents Roberts.
On Monday, defence counsel informed the court that they intend to file statements on behalf of their clients.
Magistrate Mohabir made it clear that all defence statements must be filed by October 19, and warned that no extension will be granted.
The paper committal proceedings are scheduled to commence on November 16, with the court signalling its intention to conclude that process by the end of November. Until then, the three accused have been further remanded to prison.
The latest development follows what Prosecutor Mandel Moore described as full disclosure of the State’s case.
He previously told the court that all evidence and material information gathered in the investigation had been handed over to the defence.
