— Chairman says improved access driving business, investment activities across communities

DEVELOPMENT across the Best/Klein Pouderoyen Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) is becoming increasingly visible, with new roads, schools and other infrastructure improving access while encouraging greater business and investment activities.
NDC Chairman Umesh Balram said continued investment in infrastructure and services is helping to reshape communities and create new opportunities for residents.
Speaking on the sidelines of Saturday’s sod-turning ceremony for the new $1.5 billion Pouderoyen Market, Balram highlighted several infrastructural projects currently under way across the NDC.
“We have a lot of projects going on in our NDC: road building, school building, we have the Vreed-en-Hoop Secondary School presently being built. We have roads building [sic] in Middle Street, and some are going to start on Swan Street, Lower End,” Balram said.
He added that road works are also planned for Best and Crane, with additional projects expected to commence before the end of the year.
The ongoing works come as the government pushes ahead with several major projects across Region Three, including the new Pouderoyen Market.
The development of roads, commercial spaces and other infrastructure also forms part of the wider transformation envisioned under the Government’s Model Village Initiative.
The initiative targets improvements to roads, drainage, street lighting, security and public spaces, among other areas.
Balram said improved road access has already made a significant difference for residents, particularly those who previously depended on narrow pathways to access their homes.
“It creates easy access and transportation,” he said. “Those that [sic] live within the four-feet [sic] paths now have roads at the back where they can travel, accessible, easy access. Everybody can get a car now and drive.”
MORE ROADS
According to Balram, significant progress has been made on the road network across the NDC, with only about 20 to 30 per cent remaining to be completed.
“I would say only about 20 to 30 per cent of roads in my NDC are left to be completed,” he said.
“I think this is a wonderful project going on in my NDC.”
The chairman said the improved accessibility and infrastructure are also contributing to increased economic activity, with new businesses, buildings and manufacturing facilities emerging.
“It creates an awareness for development for all, and the awareness and interest that comes with it is very attractive to the region. In some parts of my NDC, buildings and factories are going up. Establishment of other industries is going up,” Balram said.
He noted that development is not limited to major infrastructural projects, with smaller interventions also contributing to the overall improvement of communities.
Balram said the NDC continues to work alongside regional and national authorities to advance the broader development vision outlined by President, Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali.
“It is a real vision. This is a real part of most of what the president has said has happened in the region,” he said.
With road works continuing, education infrastructure being developed and a new $1.5 billion market moving ahead, Balram said communities across the NDC are experiencing improved access and greater opportunities for residents and businesses.
