THE Ministry of Public Works has said preparatory civil works at the Soesdyke Junction have advanced significantly, with the designated tarmac area now sand-filled, clearing the way for construction of a new roundabout to begin this week.
Images released by the ministry document the works carried out so far on the site as part of this essential preparatory phase.
According to the ministry, rolling and compaction of the white sand base is now nearing completion.
The milestone will facilitate the relocation of the existing car park and local vendors operating at the junction, freeing up the main project alignment ahead of construction.
With that groundwork advancing, site operations are on track to move smoothly into the next set of works, the ministry said.
The roundabout forms part of the ongoing Soesdyke-Linden Highway rehabilitation, a US$161 million project being carried out by Namalco Construction Services Ltd in partnership with GuyAmerica Construction Inc.
Once completed, it will connect the Soesdyke-Linden Highway with the Good Success to Timehri road project, joining two major East Bank Demerara corridors at one of the region’s busiest intersections and easing congestion for commuters using both routes.
The relocation effort also comes as the government moves to reorganise commercial activity at the Soesdyke Junction more broadly, with plans previously announced to consolidate vendors into a designated, organised space as part of wider development along the Soesdyke/Linden corridor.
