PAVING works have commenced on Lot 2 of the Palmyra-Moleson Creek road project, with a 200-metre asphalt trial section currently being laid.
President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali, in an update posted to his social media page, disclosed that full-scale paving is expected to begin on September 15, with crews projected to advance at a rate of approximately 100 metres per day.
Lot 2, running from Bloomfield to Number 54 Village, is valued at over $2.9 billion and is being executed by China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC). The lot forms part of the wider US$604 million Palmyra to Moleson Creek four-lane highway project, which Minister of Public Works, Bishop Juan Edghill, has said will unlock major development opportunities across Region Six.
During a recent site visit, Minster within the Ministry of Public Works, Madanlall Ramraj, noted that crusher run will also be placed along the remaining road network to prepare the corridor for the wider road expansion works.
The layering of road materials in preparation for asphalt followed, setting the stage for the current paving works.
The upgraded highway will feature wider carriageways, improved geometry, safer parking, street lighting, and modern safety standards, and is expected to significantly improve travel time and safety along the Corentyne corridor once completed. (DPI)
