Inside the mind of men who belong to yesteryear

I REMEMBER Andaiye walked out of a WPA meeting in Christopher Ram’s office. It was the time when there was the violent Buxton rampage. At the meeting Tacuma Ogunseye referred to the murderous, nihilistic, wild, empty-headed men who were creating terror along the East Coast corridor as freedom fighters. Andaiye was incensed at the asinine remark of Ogunseye.
I knew what was going on in Buxton, so any description of the criminal gunmen as freedom fighters had to come from someone who was a colossal idiot. If there is a pathetic symphony in Guyanese politics, it is played by two men – Ogunseye and David Hinds. There are times I tell myself not to bother with these two fools because there are too many other things to write about.
But I have never ignored the output of Ogunseye and Hinds and I will not in the future because I think it is not only necessary but obligatory to reply to these men because every paragraph of criticism on the nonsense they sprout educates the very young population of Guyana.
I got literally hundreds of political questions from Guyanese whom I have met on the seawall. Those questions motivate me in exposing the political miasma that pours out of Ogunseye and Hinds and others of their ilk. People who say ignore Hinds and Ogunsaye maybe do not walk every night on the seawall or visit the markets or supermarkets often.
If they do they will see that people learn from the rebuttals of what the mindsets like Ogunseye and Hinds put out. People would come up to you and say: “I read that thing you wrote about Hinds. Thank you, Mr. Kissoon; I didn’t know about that until I read it from you.” I get that reception all the time.
One gentleman came up to me in the supermarket and said, “Freddie, I didn’t know about those things you wrote about Martin Carter.” I got an email three weeks ago from an accomplished White American scholar about Rupert Roopnaraine. The scholar was a student of Roopnaraine and gave me permission to name him. A column on that email will soon follow.
So let us debunk the latest display of political nothingness from Ogunseye and Hinds. They both posted an opinion on the need for African Guyanese to rise up and remove the government. Let’s quote from the post: “There is a shared recognition that Guyana faces a serious problem that cannot be allowed to continue.” Where this shared recognition is, and who is sharing it? What is the percentage of the population that has recognised this problem muchless sharing it? And what is this problem? Is the problem connected to the government or opposition or to people like Hinds and Ogunseye?
Let’s quote these two misfits again: “Is it possible to mobilise a large and broad section of Guyanese society to change the government, either to remove it from office through legitimate political means or to place effective limits to its excess or overreach?” But Ogunseye and Hinds in the WPA along with the PNC, AFC, Forward Guyana and WIN did just that last year in two forms – the Adrianna Young bandwagon and the September general election.
And what happened? Scrapeheads funded by WIN attacked more than two dozen Chinese supermarkets, robbed innocent people, and set fires to private vehicles. This was on April 28, last year, as a reaction to the Younge post-mortem results. And after an hour of rampage, the police put down the violence. The next day Guyanese went about their business.
In relation to the general election, the electorate ignored Hinds and Ogunseye. The daily racial sermons of Hinds and Ogunseye were rejected by African Guyanese. The party of Hinds and Ogunseye named APNU was reduced to 12 seats from 31. On the other hand, the PPP added to its overall majority.
Let’s quote these two children of yesteryear again: “So realistically, it is the African collective that can muster the necessary force to do the job of removing the PPP Government.” There is so much nonsense here that it will take several columns to confront it. First, why the “African collective did not remove the PPP government in September 2025 election which was just 11 months ago?
Secondly, what is wrong with the PPP government that it has to be removed? Thirdly, where is the source of dissatisfaction in the African collective? It is this same African collective that rejected Hinds and Ogunseye. It is this same African collective that rejected the traditional African party, the PNC and voted for the party of a Muslim Indian man. Hinds and Ogunseye belong to the dustbin of yesteryear.
