TWENTY children of employees of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) have been awarded bursaries in recognition of their academic achievements under the institution’s annual programme, which supports students in maintaining high standards throughout their education.
The GPHC Bursary Programme, established in 2019, awards 20 bursaries annually to the highest-performing applicants. This year, the Corporation received more than 40 nominations, from which the top 20 students were selected.
Each recipient is eligible to receive $25,000 per academic year, provided they maintain an academic average of at least 75 per cent.
Director of Human Resources, Ms Rohmena Chung, reminded the students that the award represents not only recognition of their achievements but also an incentive to continue pursuing academic excellence.
Delivering remarks on behalf of GPHC Chief Executive Officer, Mr Robbie Rambaran, Chung congratulated the bursary recipients and their parents, acknowledging the sacrifices and support that contributed to their success.
One of the recipients, Javier Collins, shared his personal journey, reflecting on the loss of his NGSA teacher, Ms Sylvia Reed, and his grandmother, Mrs Ellen Collins, shortly after he received his examination results.
Despite the losses, Collins expressed gratitude to his family, teachers and the leadership of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation for their support.
Addressing his fellow bursary recipients, he described the award as “fuel for our future” and encouraged them to continue working hard while honouring those who supported them along the way.
The annual bursary programme forms part of the GPHC’s broader effort to support the children of its employees and recognise academic achievement.
By providing financial assistance while encouraging students to maintain strong academic performance, the Corporation said the initiative seeks to help the next generation pursue their educational goals and contribute to their families, communities and the wider society.
