Circumstances of Liza Unity fire will be determined – Natural Resources Ministry

THE Ministry of Natural Resources, on Monday, assured that the circumstances of the small fire aboard the Liza Unity Floating Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel will be determined as it emphasised its commitment to safety across offshore operations.

In a statement, the ministry said it has been informed by ExxonMobil Guyana Limited of a potential safety issue aboard the Liza Unity.

“ExxonMobil reported to the ministry that heat detectors were activated in the laundry room of the living quarters, indicating a small fire that was quickly extinguished. The appropriate response procedures were immediately initiated. All personnel aboard the vessel are safe and accounted for,” the statement said.

The ministry said it wished to note that “the relevant regulatory authorities will conduct the necessary follow-up to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.”

Further, the ministry said it remains committed to prioritising the safety and well-being of workers and ensuring the highest standards of safety across offshore operations.

“It (the ministry) will continue to closely engage ExxonMobil Guyana Limited and the relevant regulatory agencies on this incident,” the statement said.
